Search Engine Optimization and Submission

What is SEO ?

SEO - The act of optimizing a webpage and/or web site to perform well in the search engines. There is a growing niche of consultants and firms who specialize in this. Search engine optimization (SEO) The process of updating HTML code and choosing targeted keyword phrases related to a site, and ensuring that the site places well when those keywords are queried on search engines. Search Engine Optimization (SEO) involves the careful optimization of corporate web sites to effectively increase their visibility in the major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Alta-Vista, Inktomi and many others. It makes the difference between a web site that has very little visibility and one that will be seen and found by millions of people.

Why use SEO ?

Just a few short years ago, submitting your website to a variety of search engines was enough to virtually ensure your site of a certain degree of success, or at least enough to bring in a reasonable amount of hits, page views, and for commercial sites, customers. That was a few years ago, however, and today webmasters are faced with an entirely different task, and a significantly more daunting one at that. At the last estimate, there are an approximated 7.5 to 8 billion web pages on the Internet, all trying to do the same thing - get noticed.

Talk about stiff competition! Before you decide to pull the plug on your website, however, there is a proven way for you to help your site climb up the rankings ladder into prime position in the search results of most major websites - SEO.

What is SEO? SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a way for you to improve your sites' ranking by identifying your target market and relevant keywords.

Basically what the SEO process does is let you focus your efforts in the right direction, to make sure that your site is seen by the people who really want to see it. The SEO process achieves this goal by writing the keywords your target customers generally use to search for a site like yours, into Meta tags, page titles, and content in your site. This step ensures that your site is properly prepared for submission to search engines.

Once your site has been fitted with Meta tags, it is time to submit it to search engines, which generate between 80-90% of all Internet traffic. That statistic alone should be enough to inform you on the amount of potential customers you are missing out on if you do not get your site listed in the top search engines.

In addition, according to the latest statistics, less than 10% of all users look past the first three pages of search results, a statistic which speaks volumes of the importance of getting your site in prime position in the major search engines. Currently there are only 10-20 search engines that matter, so don't be fooled by advertisements that claim to be able to put you in 300,000 search engines for one low price.

Over 90% of users turn to the top 10-20 search engines, rendering the remaining 299,980 of them worthless. These services also employ shameless mail bombing and spamming techniques that can end up doing serious damage to your site's ranking in the big search engines over the long run. If you plan to employ SEO techniques to improve your site's position in the major search engines, turn to a reputable web promotion firm, and be sure to research their history and results thoroughly before making your decision.
